What Estate Items We Evaluate
The term “estate liquidation” covers a broad range of items. At our shop, we are specifically equipped to evaluate and purchase:
- Gold jewelry of all karats (rings, necklaces, bracelets, earrings)
- Sterling silver flatware, holloware, and decorative pieces
- Gold and silver coins — U.S. and foreign, circulated and uncirculated

Items we do not purchase include gold-plated, silver-plated, or costume jewelry. If you are unsure about any piece, bring it in — we will test it and let you know at no cost.
Step One: Organize Before You Visit
You do not need to have everything perfectly organized, but a little sorting goes a long way. Separate items you believe are solid gold or silver from items you suspect might be plated. Check for hallmarks — look on the inside of rings, on clasp backs, or on the undersides of flatware handles. Gather any documentation you have: appraisals, receipts, insurance records, coin grading slips, or watch papers. These documents can assist with our evaluation, though they are not required.
Step Two: The Evaluation Visit
When you arrive at American Gold Buyers, bring the items you want evaluated. There is no appointment required, though you are welcome to call ahead. Our team will examine each item, test metals for purity using acid or electronic testing, weigh precious metals, and assess any numismatic or collector value in coins. We will explain what we find as we go.
For coins, we check for key dates, mint marks, and condition. A common-date Morgan dollar in circulated condition is worth its silver melt value; the same dollar in MS-65 condition, or in a rare date, could be worth multiples of that. Taking the time to examine everything carefully is worth the extra time.
Step Three: Receiving an Offer
Once we have completed our evaluation, we will make you an offer for the items we can purchase. Offers are based on current precious metal spot prices, the numismatic or collector value of coins, and the secondary market value of watches and diamonds. We explain how we arrived at each number. You are under no obligation to accept any offer, and you are free to take the items home and think it over.
Step Four: Payment
If you accept our offer, we pay cash or check on the spot. There is no waiting period, no consignment arrangement, and no fees deducted from your payment. What we offer is what you receive.

A Note on Sentimental Value
We understand that many inherited items carry deep personal meaning. There is no requirement that you sell anything. Some families choose to keep heirlooms and sell the rest; others sell everything and distribute the proceeds.
